The decay can create an infection inside the tooth or an abscess in the surrounding bone. Although the infected tooth can be quite painful, the process to remove the infected nerve or root canal is not painful and is the only option to save the tooth.

A root canal prevents bacteria from multiplying within the pulp chamber. The treatment involves removing the nerve and the pulp of the tooth, so the possibility of further infection in the jaw or within the tooth itself is no longer an issue.
